Signorello Cabernet Sauvignon 'Padrone' 2018

Signorello Padrone Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is the flagship proprietary red blend from Signorello Estate, located on the eastern hillsides of the Silverado Trail within the Napa Valley AVA.

The winery was co-founded in 1977 by Ray Signorello Sr. and his son, Ray Jr., on a 100 acre estate that functions as a rare monopole. Named 'Padrone' in honour of Ray Sr., the wine is crafted with a philosophy of expressing the power and elegance of the estate's extremely rocky hillside vineyards. Since the loss of the original winery in the 2017 Atlas Fire, the estate has transitioned to a new winemaking team led by Priyanka French and consulting director Celia Welch, focusing on high precision viticulture and sustainable farming practices.

Wine Description

This 2018 vintage presents a deep garnet-purple colour and an energetic sensory profile. The aroma is complex and intense, featuring notes of warm cassis, black cherries, and boysenberries complemented by savory hints of wild sage, black truffles, and unsmoked cigars. On the palate, the wine is medium to full bodied with a remarkable purity of fruit, displaying layers of black cherry, dark chocolate, espresso, and licorice. It is characterized by beautifully ripe, finely grained tannins and a seamless freshness that leads to a long, perfumed finish with an earthy minerality.

The varietal composition for the 2018 vintage is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Merlot. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its textural richness and has an ABV of 14.5%. Signorello Estate utilizes sustainable, 'Napa Green' certified farming practices, including the use of owl and bluebird boxes for natural pest control.

Food Pairing

The structured tannins and opulent fruit profile of Padrone pair exceptionally well with rich meat dishes such as roasted beef, venison, or grilled lamb. It is also an excellent match for mature, hard cheeses like aged Parmesan, Comte, or Pecorino. For a more regional pairing, consider a traditional tourtière or a savory roast goose.

Vintage Quality

The 2018 vintage in Napa Valley is widely considered 'textbook' and among the finest of the past two decades due to a long, cool growing season without significant heat spikes. These ideal conditions allowed for phenomenal phenolic development and a generous crop, resulting in wines with exceptional balance, deep colour, and a refined tannic backbone suitable for long term cellaring.

96 Points - Robert Parker

"The 2018 Padrone is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 6% Malbec. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes galloping out of the glass with energetic scents of warm cassis, freshly crushed black cherries, boysenberries and wild sage, plus suggestions of fragrant earth, black truffles and unsmoked cigars with a waft of cedar chest. The medium to full-bodied palate is an exercise in elegance, delivering beautifully ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless freshness to support the intense black fruit and savory layers, finishing long and perfumed."
