Sansonina Merlot 2007 - 1.5 Litre
Sansonina Merlot 2007 is a premium red wine from the Veronese IGT (Rosso Veronese) in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. This wine is the flagship project of Carla Prospero Zenato and her daughter Nadia Zenato, who sought to prove that the clay-rich soils south of Lake Garda—traditionally known for white Lugana wines—could produce world-class, structured reds. The name "Sansonina" refers to a historic 18th-century farmhouse on the estate, originally named after a former owner whose strength earned her the nickname "Little Samson".
Wine Description
In the 1.5-litre Magnum format, this 2007 vintage has benefited from a slower maturation process, preserving its freshness while developing deep complexity. In the glass, it presents a deep ruby-red color with garnet hues at the rim. The nose is intense and evolved, offering concentrated aromas of plum, dried dates, and black cherry, layered with sophisticated tertiary notes of mocha, sweet spices, tobacco, and cocoa. On the palate, it is full-bodied and plush, known for its "dark and brooding" personality and a velvety, mouth-filling texture. Stylistically, it strikes a balance between powerful concentration and refined elegance, concluding with a long, mineral-inflected finish.
Varietal Composition: 100% Merlot, sourced from old vines (some over 50 years old).
Winemaking: Fermented in temperature-controlled wooden vats and aged for 18 months in new French oak barriques, followed by extensive bottle aging.
Optimal Drinking Window: This 2007 vintage is currently in its prime maturity. While standard bottles are at their peak, the 1.5L Magnum format ensures it will remain vibrant and complex through 2028–2030.
Accolades
James Suckling – 92 points (noting its "long and refined" finish)
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) – 91 points (described as "singular... with no shortage of personality")
Wine Enthusiast – 91 points
