Chateau Cos d'Estournel 1999

Situated in the Saint Estèphe region of Bordeaux, France, Chateau Cos d'Estournel is a prestigious Second Grand Cru Classé estate famously known as a 'Super Second'. The estate, established in 1811 by Louis Gaspard d'Estournel—the 'Maharajah of Saint Estèphe'—is renowned for its unique oriental-inspired architecture and a history of innovative global trade. The winemaking philosophy under current owner Michel Reybier focuses on technical precision and minimal intervention, utilizing a world-class, fully gravity-fed cellar to protect the integrity of the fruit.

Wine Description

The 1999 vintage is a classic and elegant expression of Saint Estèphe, presenting a dark ruby colour with a well-defined, detailed bouquet. On the nose, it reveals a layered complexity of blackberry, cassis, melted tar, and cigar humidor, becoming earthier and more nuanced with aeration. The palate is medium bodied and structured, featuring a fine line of acidity and impressions of leather, white pepper, and dried herbs. This blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot shows refined tannins and a fresh, linear cadence that leads to a persistent, mineral-driven finish. Currently at full maturity, this wine is drinking perfectly now, though well-stored bottles retain the verve to last through 2030 to 2034.
