Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune Greves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 2022

Introduction

This superb red wine is from France, specifically the Burgundy region, in the Côte de Beaune subregion within the Beaune Premier Cru appellation. Bouchard Père & Fils, established in 1731, acquired a monopoly on this exceptional vineyard in the heart of Beaune Grèves in 1791, during the sale of national properties. The name 'Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus' ('Vineyard of the Child Jesus') refers to a historical anecdote where a Carmelite nun, Marguerite du Saint-Sacrement, predicted the birth of King Louis XIV. The vineyard is considered a benchmark for the appellation and, by some, an unofficial Grand Cru.

Wine Description

This Premier Cru is made from 100% Pinot Noir. The colour is more crimson than purple, with a vivid but not overly intense hue. The bouquet is lovely, with alluringly ripe aromas of blackberries, dark red berries, plum, spices, violets, and rose petals, sometimes revealing a whiff of leather. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, dense, broad, and enveloping, with great concentration and finesse. It features fruit flavours of black cherry and dark red berries, along with notes of wood and spice. The tannins are fine, silky, and powerful, lending a robust, serious, and built-to-age structure. The finish is long, velvety, and lifted by a refined, mineral, and saline note, distinguishing this unique wine. The optimal drinking window extends significantly, with potential for ageing for 30 years or more after the harvest, typically best enjoyed from 2027–2055. The ABV is 13.5% or 13%. This wine is made from organically grown grapes and is produced under the philosophy of Agriculture Raisonnée (sustainable farming).
